Review:
Phoebe is in her 30s and finds herself questioning if her life is worth living. She has faced infertility, a failed marriage, and the death of her cat. She checks into one of the most pristine hotels in Rhode Island with plans to end her life, unaware that an elaborate wedding is taking place the same weekend. In a twist of fate, she meets the bride, Lila, and the two women form a deep, life-changing bond. Phoebe unexpectedly becomes Lila’s maid of honor, and through humor, grief, and love, both women find healing and renewal.
I liked this book, though the beginning was slow. Once the story picked up, I found myself rooting for Phoebe. The ending tied the story together beautifully, showing how Phoebe and Lila saved each other in different ways. I would love to see a sequel.
This story would resonate with mature high school readers, as it sends a powerful message about perseverance and hope. It shows how connections with others can change our outlook on life.
Themes include personal growth, second chances, trust, grief, friendship, identity, and the unpredictability of life.
While the cover suggests a lighthearted read, the book is deeper and more emotional than expected. The novel is suitable for readers aged 15 and up and could inspire thoughtful classroom discussions about character development, perspective, and societal expectations.
