Goodreads Link: Ash’s Cabin

Summary:
Ash, a nonbinary teen struggling to find their place in the world, decides to escape society’s noise and expectations by living off the grid in the California wilderness. Inspired by their late grandfather’s dream of building a hidden cabin, Ash sets out alone with their dog, hoping to reconnect with nature and find purpose. What begins as an act of independence becomes a lesson in survival, courage, and connection as they face isolation, danger, and wildfire season.

Review:
Ash’s Cabin is a beautifully illustrated and emotionally resonant story of self-discovery and resilience. Jen Wang captures both the awe and danger of nature while exploring themes of identity, belonging, and climate anxiety. Ash’s story feels deeply human—rooted in grief, hope, and the desire to be understood. The bond between Ash and their dog adds warmth and vulnerability to the narrative, while the visual storytelling enhances the emotional tone of each scene. Readers who appreciated The Magic Fish or This Was Our Pact will find Ash’s Cabin equally thoughtful and moving. Perfect for students seeking a reflective, visually rich summer read.
