Review:
In Out of My Dreams, the third book of Sharon M. Draper’s series, readers follow Melody Brooks, a twelve-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, as she goes on an unexpected journey to London. After saving her neighbor, Miss Gertie, Melody becomes a local hero. Impressed by Melody’s quick thinking, Miss Gertie nominates her to represent the U.S. at an international symposium for differently-abled youth in England. Accompanied by her family and friends, Melody navigates the challenges of travel and public speaking, all while advocating for greater accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The story concludes in a powerful speech delivered by Melody, highlighting the importance of empathy and equal opportunities for all.

This book and series could easily be used to discuss character development and theme in ELA classes. Personally, I think this series is great for students who have classmates with disabilities. It helps readers see a new perspective that might change how they understand and treat their peers.
