Full Review
Pork Belly Tacos with a Side of Anxiety is a heart-wrenching and candid portrayal of a young woman’s struggle to balance cultural identity with mental health. I chose this book to explore the cultural comparisons between my students’ lives and the experiences of Hispanic families, and it effectively reflects the deep bonds, resilience, and unique pressures present in these communities.
The depiction of mental health is particularly intense. Castañeda is unflinching in her description of bulimia and the extent to which she concealed her suffering from those closest to her. While the level of detail is powerful, it is also alarming; I would caution that this book may be too heavy for some high school students without proper framing. However, in a health education setting, this memoir could be a vital tool for discussing eating disorders and the importance of seeking help. Despite the difficult subject matter, the author beautifully portrays the strength and sacrifice of immigrant parents committed to their children’s futures.
