Review: Gnome and Rat are great friends who live in a beautiful forest. Gnome is absolutely obsessed with his red hat. Rat is a tad more relaxed, but knows how to “push gnome’s buttons.” All of the chapters focus on gnomes red hat and their fun adventures together. This is a graphic novel for younger readers. The pictures are cute and innocent, but are extremely detailed. I’m actually glad that the book is recommended all the way up through 4th grade simply because there is a lot of analyzing that goes into reading this book. The language the author uses us light and fun, but will get the kids thinking. She uses some higher level vocabulary, but then will throw in words like “beetlebutts” that will make the kids giggle. Very creative! I think this would be a great book for all levels of readers because they can get a lot out of the images, and I also think it’s great for an independent reading book because it would keep their interest.
