Summary:
Will Chambers is the only “round kid” in a school full of thin ones. He hides behind oversized hoodies and avoids the cafeteria, struggling with shame and self-doubt. When a cruel comment in fourth grade triggers years of pain, Will begins to spiral, using food restriction to cope. Through his art, therapy, and the support of family and new friends, Will slowly learns that he is more than his body and that self-acceptance takes courage and time.
Review:
A Work in Progress is a heartfelt, beautifully illustrated story that blends verse, prose, and sketches to capture one boy’s journey toward self-acceptance. Jarrett Lerner brings depth and empathy to Will’s struggle with body image and mental health, portraying a reality many middle-grade readers rarely see represented—especially boys. While emotionally heavy, it offers an important look at how harmful words and societal pressures can shape identity. Readers will root for Will as he shifts from feeling invisible to beginning to see himself as invincible. A moving, necessary story for classrooms and libraries alike.
