In the second installment of The Outer Space Mystery Pizza Club series, Bruce Hale delivers a rollicking sci-fi adventure that works perfectly as a standalone story. We rejoin siblings Tina and Mateo, their babysitter Jennica, and the neighbor kid, Booker. Just as they are reminiscing about their time on planet Kroon, their alien allies NoWay and Clorox arrive on Earth with a warning: the villainous Grunthar is back.
The book is a fast-paced mystery that readers from 1st through 5th grade will enjoy. One of the highlights is the humorous character design; readers will get a good chuckle visualizing Grunthar with his purple skin, elephant ears, and aardvark-like nose.
Beyond the gadgets and aliens, Hale beautifully weaves in a theme of sibling rivalry. Tina is desperate to be the one to solve the mystery this time, especially since Mateo was the hero of the first book. However, the story ultimately highlights that the “Grunthar problem” can only be solved through teamwork. With fun black-and-white illustrations by Luke Séguin-Magee spaced throughout, this is an excellent choice for fans of The Alien Next Door or Hale’s other hits like Chet Gecko.
🚀 Science Fiction vs. Fantasy: What’s the Difference?
While both genres involve the extraordinary, Grunthar’s Revenge falls squarely into Science Fiction because it relies on the “possibility” of technology and outer space.
- Technology (The “Sci”): In Science Fiction, the impossible happens because of inventions (like Grunthar’s gadgets) or space travel.
- The Setting: Stories set on other planets (Kroon) or involving extraterrestrial visitors (NoWay and Clorox) help ground the story in a “future-possible” reality.
- The Mystery: Much like a detective story, sci-fi mysteries require characters to use logic and observations of the “alien” world to solve problems.

- ELA (Character Motivation & Sibling Rivalry):
- Activity Idea: Discuss Tina’s desire to be the hero. Why is it important to her? Have students write a “Diary Entry” from Tina’s perspective halfway through the book, explaining her feelings about Mateo’s previous success.

- Activity Idea: “The Pizza Heist.” Have students draw a picture of Grunthar’s crew and write 2–3 paragraphs explaining why they think aliens would be after Earth’s pizza. Is it the cheese? The pepperoni? Or a secret ingredient they need for rocket fuel?
- Science (Space Exploration):
- Activity Idea: Kroon is a fictional planet, but what makes a planet habitable? Research the conditions of planets in our solar system and have students “design” a planet that could support a creature with elephant ears and an aardvark nose.
- Literacy (Predicting Plot Twists):
- Activity Idea: Use the black-and-white illustrations as “clues.” Before reading a chapter, show the students the picture and have them predict what happens based on the alien characters’ expressions.
