Publisher’s Summary

A novel about the magical lure of books and summoning the courage to rewrite our stories by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Keeper of Happy Endings and The Last of the Moon Girls.

Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

With no trace of how these mysterious books came into the world, Ashlyn is caught up in a decades-old literary mystery, beckoned by two hearts in ruins, whoever they were, wherever they are. Determined to learn the truth behind the doomed lovers’ tale, she reads on, following a trail of broken promises and seemingly unforgivable betrayals. The more Ashlyn learns about Hemi and Belle, the nearer she comes to bringing closure to their love story—and to the unfinished chapters of her own life.

Full Review

I was immediately drawn to this book due to its captivating setting—a cozy, small bookstore. There is something endlessly enchanting about stories set in quaint bookshops that always piques my interest; perhaps it’s the magical allure of being completely surrounded by endless shelves of knowledge and human imagination. If I ever struck it rich, I would undoubtedly buy myself a shop and become the proud owner of such a haven for book lovers.

What makes this book particularly intriguing is its unique narrative structure, which beautifully revolves around a story-within-a-story containing two distinct perspectives on the exact same timeline of events. Through the eyes of each protagonist, Hemi and Belle, we witness the gradual, painful unraveling of a historical love story. The gripping mystery lies entirely in the fine details of what went awry and who ultimately bears the responsibility for the fallout. It is a refreshing experience to constantly switch between these viewpoints, gaining deep insight into each character’s internal thoughts and true motivations.

From the very outset, the reader is made aware that something went terribly amiss in the romance between these two individuals, yet the specifics remain tantalizingly elusive until the end. As the plot progresses, your emotional investment in the characters deepens, and the desire to see their love endure across time grows ever stronger. By the time the book reaches its final chapters, you find yourself fervently rooting for the preservation and redemption of their romance, completely eager to discover how it will all unfold.

🎒 Classroom & Curricular Connections

  • English Language Arts (The Framed Narrative & Unreliable Narrators):
    • Activity Idea: “The Two Sides of a Bound Book.” Hemi and Belle offer conflicting accounts of their betrayal. Have students keep a two-column dialectical journal tracking major plot turning points, analyzing how each lover rationalizes their choices and why memory can be inherently biased.
  • Creative Writing (Psychometry as a Literary Device):
    • Activity Idea: “Object Echoes.” Ashlyn uses a form of magic where she can read the emotional fingerprints left on old items. Bring in a collection of old, safe objects (vintage keys, antique postcards, used bookmarks). Have students choose an item and write a short flash-fiction piece mapping out the “emotional echo” left behind by an imaginary previous owner.
